Collection: Jan Mott
As a young girl growing up in rural upstate New York, Jan Mott was surrounded by a family of artisans with a variety of talents, from painting to sewing and woodworking. Living in the country, she was always close to nature and wildlife, which later influenced much of her art. After studying graphic design in college, she took her artistic talent home to pursue a career in graphic arts. She worked with local businesses on advertising campaigns and illustrated special news features with the editorial department. In her spare time, Jan joined the local art guild and entered juried art shows with her watercolor paintings and pottery sculptures.
While antiquing one day, Jan found a traditional textile art called penny rugs. This discovery renewed her interest in textiles, and she began exploring wool applique. Wanting to use her illustration skills, she started designing pieces inspired by realism and nature, turning her stitching projects into works of art. Jan founded the pattern company "Crane Design" and gradually expanded it to include realistic country and seaside patterns. Now, Crane Design offers over 200 patterns sold to quilt shops and stitching fans across the US and Canada. Through trunk shows and social media, Jan has built a strong following and draws inspiration from shop owners and the stitching community.
Today, Jan continues to design patterns as well as fabric collections. As a member of the Henry Glass design team, she uses her skills and passions to create collections for quilters worldwide.
